Salt of life

The ancient port town of Marakkanam is located 120 km from Chennai, Tamil Nadu.The trees lining the highway give way to expansive panoramic fields with row upon row of square water patches as far as the eyes can see. Spread over 4000 acres of land, Marakkanam's salt pans are the third largest producer of salt in the state. The desolate grey and white landscape is broken by dots of colour that are the salt pan workers. Here, I have tried to capture the not so shimmering lives of the workers, steeped every day in the corrosive, scorching evaporation ponds raking out crystal salt.
